Lallana voted Vauxhall England Player of the Year
Adam Lallana has been voted as 2016’s Vauxhall England Player of the Year and was handed the trophy by Vauxhall Football competition winner Lee Mann, from Melton Mowbray.
The Liverpool playmaker polled 39% of votes from members of the England Supporters Club, pipping Jamie Vardy (12%) and Wayne Rooney (8%) to the prize.
Lallana was a regular for the Three Lions across 2016, but his standout performances were reserved for the latter part of the year. The 28-year-old scored his first international goal in September’s last-gasp win over Slovakia, before going on to net in November’s games against Scotland and Spain at Wembley.
Having collected his award from an England Supporters’ Club member and vauxhallfootball.co.uk competition winner, Lallana spoke of his delight at being recognised by the nation’s supporters.
“This award is a huge honour,” Lallana told TheFA.com. “The last three winners were Rooney (2015), Rooney (2014) and Steven Gerrard (2012) so that just goes to show what a great achievement this is.
“Things have been going well this season for my club so that always helps. When you’re playing well for your club then hopefully you can transmit your form into the national team and help out.
“That’s what has been happening but I don’t want that to be for just one season – I want to continue that for as long as possible.
“Off the back of a disappointing year for England as a whole, I’ll be looking to definitely improve in 2017 and hopefully we can build on how it has started under Gareth Southgate, as there have been plenty of positives.”
England Supporters’ Club member and vauxhallfootball.co.uk competition winner Lee Mann commented:
“It was a huge honour to award Adam with the Vauxhall England Player of the Year award, and I can’t thank Vauxhall enough for the opportunity.
“It was such a shock when I found out that I would be handing the trophy over, and the whole day was a fantastic experience.
“He thoroughly deserves his award and I am sure he will continue to go from strength to strength for England in 2017.”
Lallana will hope to maintain his good form when the Three Lions resume their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign on Sunday 26 March, as they take on Lithuania at Wembley. Tickets are on sale now via TheFA.com/Tickets.
