Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland got their European Championship qualification campaign off to a perfect start with a 2-1 victory against Hungary last night.
In front of a sell-out crowd at Budapest’s FTC Arena, it was Hungary’s Tamas Priskin who struck first in the 75th minute much to the delight of the home supporters.
The 1000 travelling fans did not have to wait long, however, as a striking run from Kyle Lafferty set up Niall McGinn’s 81st minute equaliser.
With Hungary down to 10 men due to an injury, it was Lafferty once again who broke through the Hungarian defence to poke home an 88th minute winner and secure Northern Ireland’s first away win in four years.
