Wembley Stadium has been selected to host the finals of UEFA EURO 2020, after beating off strong competition from Munich and its Allianz Arena and Glasgow’s Hampden Park will be one of the host city venues for the tournament.

In six years’ time, the ‘Euro for Europe’ will reach its conclusion under the arch, where both semi-finals and the Final are to take place.

Having won the race to host EURO 2020’s conclusion, England will welcome a week of thrilling tournament football.

The FA chairman Greg Dyke has declared that the award will have a positive effect on all of English football.

He said: “It will be a great honour to be part of what will surely be a superb celebration of 60 years of the UEFA European Championship.

“My thanks go to all our partners in the bid – particularly the Government, Greater London Authority and the Mayor of London – and of course to UEFA president Michel Platini and the UEFA Executive Committee.

“I also congratulate all of the other successful bidding nations.”

Dyke added: “This bidding process was open to more than 50 UEFA countries so for Wembley to be ultimately recognised in this way is testament to a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

“Having seen the impact that a home Olympic Games had on young sportsmen and women in our country, I hope that UEFA EURO 2020 serves as a similar incentive for our most promising players to realise their full potential over the next six years.”

The Scottish FA and the entire Glasgow UEFA Euro 2020 bid team were also delighted that Hampden Park has been selected as a host city for the European Championships’ 60th anniversary.

Hampden Park will host Euro 2020 football.

Hampden Park will be one of 13 host city venues for Euro 2020 football.

The UEFA Executive Committee convened in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday and awarded Glasgow and Hampden Park a Standard Package of three group-stage matches and one knockout phase match.

It means the city of Glasgow and the national stadium will be one of 13 host city venues for the showpiece event, selected by the UEFA ExCo from 19 submissions across Europe.

Stewart Regan, Scottish FA chief executive, believes the host city status will help realise the Association’s strategic plan, Scotland United: A 2020 Vision.

“It is wonderful news and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved from the outset of what has been a fantastic bid,” he said.

“I believe Glasgow and Hampden Park will throw a fitting birthday party for the European Championships and I know the whole country will make it an occasion to remember.

“We have worked hard to establish our strategic plan and today’s announcement gives us a perfect platform on which to realise our ambitions.

“It would be great if Scotland can qualify for Euro 2020, playing in front of a full house at Hampden Park with a successful national team represented by graduates from our Performance Schools.

“On the back of a hugely successful Commonwealth Games, and ahead of what will be a memorable Ryder Cup, I am delighted Scotland, Glasgow and Hampden Park will again look forward to being the focus of worldwide attention for Euro 2020.”

Held every four years, the UEFA European Championship will be played as a ‘EURO for Europe’ in summer 2020 with 13 different cities staging matches across the continent as part of celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the competition.
