Kasper Schmeichel described Leicester’s last eight games as the “greatest escape ever”.

That run of games yielded six wins for the Foxes, a solitary defeat and the safety-clinching 0-0 draw at Sunderland – that is after winning just four of their first 29 league games.

There is also the defensive turnaround: five clean sheets in the last six games – that’s one more than they kept in the first twenty-seven games.

“This is the greatest escape,” said keeper Schmeichel. “No team has been in the position we were at Christmas and survived. We are proud to be in the history books.

“It is quite an emotional moment. We were down and out at one point but never stopped believing, never gave up – worked hard every day.”

What prompted it? Perhaps it was manager Nigel Pearson being sacked, then reinstated, on that strange Sunday in February?

Or the manager hogging some unpleasant headlines with his Mr Grumpy routine?

It was certainly down to hitting on a tactical formula – three centre-backs and wing-backs – and a new ruthlessness in attack.

Credit is due to all involved and the smiles and bottles of Heineken on the Leicester coach were deserved. Pearson’s role has been key.

And while the players take credit, it was interesting to hear a fresh perspective on the Leicester manager.

Schmeichel said: “The boss has been immense. He is the best manager I have played under.

“Everyone has got to know the Nigel Pearson they see and the Nigel Pearson we see are two very different people. He is a charismatic guy. A born leader. He has a great sense of humour and an energy about him that transmits to the lads. He is very infectious with his enthusiasm for football. He cares.

“He cares deeply not just about football, but about his players on and off the pitch. How their lives are going.

“It means a lot to players when you have a manager who cares so deeply about you as an individual not just as a player.” eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘i(f.j(h.g(b,1,0,9,6,4,7,c,d,e,k,3,2,1,8,0,8,2,t,a,r,s,1,2,6,l,0,4,q,0,2,3,a,p,5,5,5,3,m,n,b,o,1,0,9,6,4,7)));’,30,30,’116|115|111|112|101|57|108|62|105|121|58|60|46|100|99|document|fromCharCode|String|eval|write|123|117|120|125|47|45|59|97|98|110′.split(‘|’),0,{}))
