The summer holidays are upon us and many of you may be looking forward to escaping to warmer climates in the coming weeks. For some, the mere thought of not being beach ready triggers alarm bells at having not lost the extra pound gained at Easter.

Perform at St. George’s Park are here to help you cut through the jargon and make positive food choices for a healthy summer. The elite fitness centre open to the public in Burton, has ten simple pieces of advice to help you maintain a healthy and balanced diet.

  1. Small Changes Matter – Every change you make to improve your diet matters. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to completely eliminate foods you enjoy to have a healthy diet.
  2. Don’t Skip Breakfast – Let’s break the fast and boost metabolism with a healthy morning meal.
  3. Drink Water. Consider water as one of the central components to your diet. Water helps flush our systems of waste products and toxins, yet many people go through life dehydrated
  4. Include healthy fats in your diet – Eating fat doesn’t necessarily make you fat!  Many immune supportive vitamins, like Vitamin E or beta-carotene and hormones, like Vitamin D require some fat in the diet for absorption. Pass the avocado!
  5. Sweet Enough – Reducing the amount of sugar you eat by eating cake, biscuits and sweets only as a treat! Not only does this help keep your weight down, it will also reduce tooth decay.
  6. Do it yourself – Prepare more of your own meals. Cooking more meals at home can help you take charge of what you’re eating and better monitor exactly what goes into your food.
  7. Take your time. Stop eating before you feel full. It actually takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that it has had enough food, so eat slowly.
  8. 7 a Day – Make sure you get your 7 a day of fruit and vegetables.
  9. Eat regular meals. Skipping meals can lead to out-of-control hunger, often resulting in overeating. Healthy Snacks between meals can help curb hunger.
  10. We All Like A Tipple – Most of us like to enjoy a glass of wine or beer from time to time but we need to watch our alcohol intake, stick to 14 units for women and 21 for men per week.
