England bowler James Anderson can only watch from the sidelines as England continue their fourth Test at Trent Bridge this week. Anderson obtained a side strain last week at Edgbaston but he is optimistic of returning for the fifth test at The Oval.

The 33-year-old was injured on day two at Edgbaston before the hosts went on to beat Australia by eight wickets. With two convincing bowling displays by England, Anderson’s omission from the fourth Test comes as a harsh blow to the side, no doubt bringing confidence to the Australian order.

Cricket is one of the most popular summer sports played across the world. Non-contact in nature, injury can occur in a variety of fashions however, overuse injuries present most commonly within the sport & particularly so in fast bowlers. Repetitive actions contribute significantly to these injuries. Injury problems which do not come under control with simple measures may need to be seen by a professional, either a sports physiotherapist or sports physician.

If injuries do occur, Perform’s world-leading rehabilitation facilities at St. George’s Park offers physiotherapy packages to return athletes to sport as quickly and safely as possible. Based at the National Football Centre, Perform prides themselves on being an accessible facility for all sports, cricket included. They also ensure athletes and patients receive the best possible treatment plans which are tailor-made for each individual case.

Anderson will be particularly missed at Nottingham, where the Lancashire fast bowler has taken an incredible 53 Test wickets at under 20 – the conditions have helped him swing the ball prodigiously.

It has been the job of Steven Finn to take the new ball and do for England what James Anderson has done for years as the team’s spearhead.

The fourth Test starts on 6th August at Trent Bridge with the fifth Test on 20th August at The Oval.
